Writing Title, Keyword And Description Tag For SEO

“I would like to ask a question about SEO. How do you write proper title, keyword, description tag for a website. Can you provide some examples of how to write a proper one?” - Kelvin Tan

Hi Kelvin,

There are two considerations in writing those tags. The first one is the SEO aspect and the second one is the marketing aspect. I’ll cover both of them in this reply.

1) The technical aspect of writing SEO friendly title, keyword and description tags

For the beginners, let me show you where to find the title, keyword and description tags in a typical html code.

Title tag - ….
Keyword tag -
Description tag -

Search engines now place little importance to keyword and description tag. But as a good practice, it’s always good to include the keyword phrase in the keyword and description tags.

For example, if I’m trying to optimize a page for “debt reduction strategies”, my keyword and description tags will be as follow:

Keyword tag -
Description tag -

Technically speaking, you can put any ‘meat’ to fill the rest of the description tag. For me, I simply use the first sentence of my article as the description tag, since the first sentence of my article will always consist of the keyword phrase (another good SEO practice).

In SEO, what is more important is the title tag.

Technically, your title tag should try to meet the following requirements:

i) Your title tag must have the ‘exact’ keyword phrase in it.

I don’t have to explain this one, do I?

ii) Your title tag should preferably be as short as possible.

There is such a thing called keyword dilution in SEO. It means if there are too many words in your title, the importance of your main keyword phrase will be ‘diluted’ in the eyes of the search engines. So try to keep your title short.

To illustrate, if my keyword phrase is “debt reduction strategies”, some examples of a good title include

- Debt Reduction Strategies
- 7 Debt Reduction Strategies
- Pitfalls and Traps of Debt Reduction Strategies
- Creative Debt Reduction Strategies

I didn’t think of these titles. These are the top 4 titles returned by Google search.

2) The marketing aspect of writing the title tag

Your title tag is very important, not only for SEO but also for human.

Why?

Because when someone does a search, he/she will first see the title in the search result.

Therefore, when writing a title, besides making sure that it fulfills the SEO requirements, you also have to do your best to write something that can entice people to click.

This is the marketing aspect of writing a good title tag, something that is hard to teach my freelance writers. :(

Notes On Description Tag

Search engines will show your description tag as the description in the search result. (Thanks to our member Proson for pointing this out.)

This means if you want to perfect a page, you should try to write something enticing in your description tag as well.

For me, I usually don’t bother. I only make sure that the exact keyword phrase is present in the description tag. That will be enough for SEO purpose.

Affiliate success: SEO or PPC?

To easily receive updates on new articles subscribe to Home Business Success today.

As I look around forums, membership sites and even blogs, I see a lot of talk about Pay Per Click for Affiliates, yet very little information on Search Engine Optimization. What's the deal? Is SEO no good for Affiliate Marketers these days?

Maybe I'm missing something? No, it's actually pretty simple... Half of these people are truly obsessed with PPC that they forget (almost completely) about SEO and concentrate a little too much on their PPC efforts. What a waste... Yes, PPC is excellent! I'm a very hardcore fan of PPC but I also realize that SEO is long term when it comes to getting traffic to your site and referring sales.

I continue to get sales for several products that I no longer promote. Why is this? Because of SEO! I have links showing up all around the web that contain my affiliate link and people are STILL purchasing through these links. It's great! Especially when I no longer spend a penny or a minute of my time or money on making these sales.

So why would others be stuck on PPC? Are they afraid of a little hard work? Maybe... maybe not.

The truth is: PPC will get better instant results. Yes, that's a fact. But when the cash runs out and the campaigns pause or end - then what? The sales end, too. So what if these people had been working on their SEO efforts and even Article Marketing on the side? They would have made a lot more money in the long run, that's for sure.

Search Engine Optimization is a major advantage for Affiliate Marketers, and I'm not sure why few speak about it. Maybe they try to keep it a secret? Maybe they view PPC as an easy way to keep the competition in and out, quickly and easily? Could be...

The fact is: SEO is just as important to real Affiliate Marketers as PPC. You can drive just as much traffic to your site with SEO than you could with your PPC campaigns, so make sure you are focusing on both.

While focusing on SEO - be sure to learn and understand Social Media Marketing (SMM) and take advantage of Web 2.0! Social Media sites such as DIGG, Reddit, StumbleUpon and others can bring you massive traffic in short amounts of time. Not to mention - these sites can give you extra results in the SERPS! YouTube? You betcha! YouTube can bring you a lot of traffic in many shapes and forms. Use it and use it wisely!

Do not stop with PPC. Continue tweaking your site until you feel that you're going to get some great results for your keywords. Link from forum signatures, take advantage of other peoples blogs (please don't take advantage in a negative way, that's not what I'm referring to!) when you find an article to be of interest and use your site link (be sure that it's relevant!) so that you get extra trickles of traffic.

SEO is still a great way to bring in more profits with your Affiliate Marketing campaigns. Use it daily and do NOT forget about it!

Using The Right Keywords Are Keys To Success

For some, keyword analysis and development is a mystery. I know when I first learned about keywords, I was thrown for a loop! It seemed everything I read about keyword density and analysis made me ask more and more questions. Instead of enlightenment, I became more and more confused. So, I thought I might develop this tutorial on keyword-ing...

First of all, there are lots of credible free tools out there you can use to develop the proper keywords for your site. Without keywords, it is difficult for search engines to send traffic to you because your website or blog doesn't leave any trails to you. Here is what I mean...

Having proper keywords are like a neon business sign. They will attract the people who are looking for what you have to sell. Whether that be a service or a product, keywords help steer your target audience to you. Think of them as digital magnets that are sticky on both sides---one side for the search engines to refer people to you, the other side for visitors to find you.

Keywords are the beginning of the sales relationship...

Many webmasters utilize their keywords in their PPC (pay per click)campaigns. Sometimes a successful PPC campaign is based on accurate keyword selection.

With the proper keyword tool, you can uncover highly targeted words that will give you high search volume with very little competition. Experts in SEO (search engine optimization) use these methods all the time, it is how they remain competitive.

A perfect example of my using proper keywords is my page, "How To Increase Your Technorati Rank"--this page is constantly one of my high traffic pages, all due to keyword selection.

When choosing a keyword tool, make sure it includes a utility that provides you with the most popular keywords on the internet currently--this may tie into Google Trends.

Also look for whether the tool provides keyword variations, similar to drill down techniques where you may select the words--make money online, and it will generate variations on these keywords. That is essential to PPC success as well as optimization success. Sometimes you can identify a niche with proper keyword generation tools.

Usually a good keyword tool will also analyze your website and provide you with feedback to improve it.

There is a new tool out that will also analyze your Adwords campaign. This is an awesome asset if you are using or planning on using Google Adwords.

I will be implementing my first Google Adwords campaign next week, and I was looking for something that would help me. The product I will select is one from my Market Leverage affiliate program. Lucky for me, I also have a $25 coupon code for Adwords, so this will be a monumental step for my internet marketing program.

You should institute a keyword tool, particularly if you want to see instant traffic, and from what I've researched and discovered, instant income.
